“Aspies”
Sunday, February 14th, 2010Aspies is the new nickname for children with Asperger’s Syndrome. I was not aware of this new trend. I just read an interesting article about Aspies and their opposition to merge their diagnose into autism spectrum disorders. The American Psychiatric Association just proposed that Asperger’s should not be a separate diagnose. They feel individuals may qualify for more services if under the broader classification. However, many are speaking out saying that they are different then autistic individuals and want their own identity. But are they different diagnose? Both disorders vary in severity from mild to extreme levels. Both autism and Asperger’s involve poor social skills, repetitive behavior or interests, and problems communicating. But unlike classic autism, Asperger’s does not typically involve delays in mental development or speech. Some say that even if they do merge the disorders, there will always be Aspies who clearly see themselves as the elite class among the others.
