Spring fever

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Today was a beautiful day. The children are on spring break from school so we took advantage of it. The weather was perfect. It was sunny and mid 70’s. We like to get the children outside as much as possible. Running around helps burn some of their excessive energy and the fresh air is also good for them. We headed for the nearby park. Successful outings like this one take a lot of preparation and organization. We packed a simple picnic lunch with each child’s favorite sandwich. Everything was in disposable containers so we don’t have to worry about losing anything. Before we even get out of the car, we go over the rules and expectations. We usually choose a park that has defined boundaries or a fenced in playground. It helps when you’re trying to watch 4 kids running in 4 different directions. Destiny usually runs around the perimeter of the park but today she spent a lot of time on the swings. And she only tried to steal someone else’s water bottle once. Anthony brought one of his action figures so he was preoccupied with that. This is another good opportunity for us to have fun with them such as pushing them on the swing and playing on the see saw. Everyone had such a wonderful time and more family memories were created. Below are some of the many wonderful photo’s that were taken for our photo album.

Sleepless nights

Monday, April 14th, 2008

We are a very busy household and our rest is always a necessity. However, sometimes Destiny disagrees. She would rather do anything except sleep. We are always trying to help her (and us) get some extra “Zzzzz”. Our nighttime routine in this family is especially important. Each night Destiny takes a bath with soothing lavender. She also gets one tablet of melatonin. Melatonin is a dietary supplement that enhances drowsiness. Our doctor said that it was a safe way to help Destiny relax. These supports usually help her but there are occasional nights that nothing works. On those nights, we just hope for the best.

Sunday School

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

We built our family on good values and beliefs. And although, we have always wanted to take the family to Sunday School, we could never find a church that could support Destiny or Anthony’s special needs. Then we found a local church that has a specific Sunday School class just for children with special needs. The class is taught by a wonderful teacher, who has experience with autism. We have been attending for almost 3 months. The children look forward to going every week. They are gaining an understanding of a higher love that will guide their hearts. We are very blessed to have found this wonderful church that welcomed our unique family into theirs.

Adoption

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

We are finally on our way to legal adoption. I feel as if this is one of the longest journeys our family has been on. It has taken us 2 ½ years just to climb to the first step of the ladder. It’s a feeling of relief that the hardest part is over. The children will remain in our family and not go back to where they came from. Let’s hope the rest of the journey doesn’t take as long.
